Nhari Nendoro

Ko makadiiko vananyamasvisva nanachihoro. Let me talk about what I know of the Nyandoro clan:

1. The original Nyandoro were Biri naGanyire, brother and sister, who gained prominence with the arrival in the Zambezi Valley of Nyatsimba Mutota from Great Zimbabwe. The clan is assumed to have lived in the Zambezi Valley (Dande) from 10th – 11th century. There are believed to be part of the Lem (VaRemba) / Jewish / Middle Eastern group associated with the Venda people in northern South Africa. The Nyandoro are of the Korekore group, but there is some evidence of some link to a specific subgroup of the Korekore, that is, Tavara (totem – Gunguo). Prominently, however they are now known to be of the Nhari totem. In poems of praise, they are also associated with the elephant.

2. The Nyandoros seem to have gained prominence at the Mutapa court for playing a key advisory role. Being Korekore / Tavara, they could not directly ascend to the Mwenemutapa throne, a position reserved for those that could be traced to the southerners that came with Nyatsimba Mutota.

3. The Zambezi valley was a centre of trade with Arabs and Portugese, resulting also in interracial marriages, hence the phrase ‘vazungu vedande’, usually associated with the Nyandoro clan.

4. A highly respected 17th century warrior called Nyandoro seemed to be the origin of the Nyandoro clan name – meaning: one who owns the Ndoro – a round shell worn by a mambo to signify authority.

5. After the defeat of the Portuguese in the 17th century by Changamire Dombo, the focus of power shifted southwards. As renowned advisors, the Nyandoro also moved southwards to be nearer the new centre of power. Increasingly, the Nyandoros also acted as regent kings in times of dispute among the Changamires.

About Me: 6. The arrival of the Ndebeles found the Nyandoros well established in the Zezuru area now called Zvimba, that covered Chinhoyi, Chegutu, and Norton. However, at some point, they refused to pay tributaries to Mzilikazi by killing his messenger. Tributaries usually consisted of maidens / virgins, crops, gold and elephant tasks. An irate Mzilikazi sent his impi sending the Nyandoros fleeing into Chief Chihota’s territory in the Chihota / Marondera area. Chihota allocated them some land where Kunzvi Dam stands extending to St Paul’s Musami. Musami is from the smaller Nyandoro grouip.

7. The first Chimurenga coincided with Mambo Kunzvi being the recognized mambo of the Northern Shonas (Manyika / Zezuru / Korekore). The influence of the mambo to Southern Shonas (Karanga) is in despute due to Mzilikazi and Lobengula’s influence in those areas. It is unclear if Kunzvi was a mambo or a regent.

8. The Nyandoro clan was further subdivided into 2, with the larger group closer to Mambo Kunzvi.

9. Colonialism also led to some Nyandoros being forcibly moved further south to the Mvuma – Chivhu area.

10. However, many Nyandoros ceased using that surname becoz it was assumed to bring bad luck. More likely, it was the effect of colonialism that confused all Shonas on the use of first names and surnames.

11. Another prominent Nyandoro is Makura, a chihoro who was Chaminuka’s first wife.

  7. This is good. I used to urgue about this. The bit I was told is about Biri naGanyire. My clan is based in the Mt Darwin area. Why I urgued was that the Unendoros from the South used to say what you have confirmed about the Nzous and Nharis. My mother was Nzou while I an Nhari Unendoro. In the Dande Mt Darwin area the two appear to be different but they are the same people.

  10. This is all very confusing. I am another unendoro from Mutoko, but they say we came from Mt Darwin area. What confuses me is that all along I was told kuti ndinoera mhofu. Recently I was told kuti handisi mhofu ndiri Nzou, and most recently ndakazoudzwa kuti ndiri Twiza (Furira mudenga or Giraffe). That leaves me all very confused. Secondly the original writer said the Nyandoros lived in the Zambezi Valley in the 10th – 11th Century but did not elaborate where they had come from. The writer also said that these people were part of the Lem people, but did not specify whether they were part of the original Jewish settlers or the result of the intermarriages between the Lem and the local people. Please help.

      1. Ndinotenda Nehandawedande, ndabatsirikana chaizvo. Aisi ndinoda kuziva kuti sezvo Biri naGanyire varivo vanonzi vakatanga nekunzi nhari, vainge vabva pamutupo upi. Ndinodawo kuziva kuti mubereki waBiri na Ganyire ainzi ani uye aiera chii.

      2. The Biri and Ganyire saga is an interesting one. One theory says they were brother and sister and that they mysteriously crossed the Zambezi from Guruuswa. They say thay this could be Tanzania and that is back then. The Bantu people moved southwards in batches and I presume that Biri and Ganyire led a group which identfied itself by the names we are all saying. The Nyandoro bit comes in and as someone rightly talked about someone who has been anointed for a specific purpose either religoiusly or leadership wise.

        The other bit I have had is the closeness of the Nzous and Unendoros. They are likely to be related by blood but may have seperated for some reasons. What we all have to understand is how all Shonas are closely related considering the Shona population which is very small. The totems however identify us as a specific group. I was told in Dande where I come from that there are 4 major Shona totems and among these the Nhari Unendoro Nyamasvisva is a major one. The other totems can be explained by what they say. Some people over time have evolved and changed totems due to fear of association war or marriage. Examples are many eg Soko.Murehwa, Mudyanevana etc etc.The other bit which proves that the Nyandoros are among the major architects of Shona clan is that : Of all the Shonas you meet, they are closely related to the Unendoros most will say, mbuya vangu,kana kuti mai vangu in Nhari. Most vazukuru vedu. We are BIG.

        Please do not take this as official as it is my own research from talking to elders.

Im confused which is which because when i am asked i dont say ndoera nzou.   54. According to oral traditions and some written records, our forefathers once lived in what is now Khartoum between the White Nile and the Blue Nile. Apparently they came to call themselves abaGova (Goba, Ngowa,Ngona, Ghoya, in some books).

    From there they migrated to Bale region of Ethiopia and named their place Goba, which still exist today. It is here that words like Ishe and Shewe became popularly used. From Goba, the abaGova or AbaGoba or amaNgowa moved to present day Lake Victoria. It is from here that the Greatest known ancestor of the Dziva-Hungwe Nation, Dzivaguru led the nation to the south.

    His symbol of power was the feathers of the fish eagle (Hungwe) which he wore as a crown and the conus shell. The migration took many years but eventually the Dziva-Hungwe Nation reached the Zambezi river. The Dziva-Hungwe migration was from the Great Lakes to the south of the mighty Zambezi and eventually to Vhembe(Limpopo).

    When Dzivaguru reached the Zambezi he did what he had to do and according to tradition, he pointed to the south of the Zambezi and said “There is our home. There we shall live and prosper.”

    At this time they still called themselves abaGoba.

    Eventually they crossed the great Zambezi River. On the way south after the passing on of the Great One, his sons split.

    Nyamukoko and Kaluba remained in the north to later become the Tavara people. One son Luvhimbi went south.

    Later in history, this is captured in the Brian Rouftopolis edited book ‘Becoming Zimbabwe: A History from the Pre-colonial Period to 2008’: “After consolidating his position in the north, (Nyatsimba) Mutota successfully accommodated local Tonga/Tavara spirits Dzivaguru and Karuva of the Nhari Unendoro totem, to merge the superior of them all, thus adding a strong religious element to an already secular system that defined the Mutapa-Korekore identity” (pp16, 2008). The well-known ancestor of the Dziva-Hungwe was Dzvivaguru who lies in state in the Mavuradonha Mountains and his son Kaluba (aka Karuva) is the ancestor of the Nhari Unendoro people. The Nhari Unendoro are referred to as Maokomavi in their praise poetry, the same praise name is used by the Hungwe. The Hungwe are also referred to as Chivara which is also synonymous with Ndoro, in their case referring to the white plumage of the Hungwe bird.
    As the first Bantu people in southern Africa, they needed to grow their populations and it is during this time that various families adopted different water-based totems after their ancestor Dzivaguru.

    Luvhimbi became Shiriyedenga (Hungwe) and as the oldest of Dzivaguru’s sons and assumed leadership which saw the setting up the earliest kingdom in southern Africa with its capital city at Mapungubwe, just south of the Limpopo River (Vhembe). They lived side-by-side the Khoi-khoi and the San people who had lived in southern Africa for centuries. It is believed that the first group to settle in Northern South Africa settled at Zwaluvhimbi, Ha-Makuya. From there he group settled at Ha-Luvhimbi, all named after the founder Luvhimbi. Luvhimbi was a great rainmaker who was also known as Tshirumbula-Mikovha (one whose rain turns gorges into rivulets).

    Dziva-Hungwe influence extended southwards and they had reached the area south of Vhembe (Limpopo) River by 500 AD where they founded a kingdom, the legendary Mapungubwe which dates back to the 6th Century. Mapungubwe predates the settlements at Great Zimbabwe, Thulamela, Dzata and Khami.

    Hungwe ancestors have strong roots in the Dzivhani Ngona Tribe found in the Venda area of South Africa.

    According to one version of vaNgona oral history, they settled in present day Venda area as early as the 6th Century and their capital was Mapungubwe. This tradition states that one of the vaNgona Kings was Ishe Shiriyadenga (loosely translated, Bird of the Sky) whose royal kraal was at Mapungubwe. He would also later be referred to as Ishe Hungwe (and so were all his successors), after the African fish eagle representing the totem of his forefathers, and by extension the totem of his people.

    Not much is documented about the brothers Nyamukoko and Karuva but there is strong evidence that the Kaluba (Karuva) descendants were key political and religious advisers to the Mutapa kings and the Dzivaguru and Karuva spirit mediums are revered among the Tonga, Tavara and Korekore to this day. Oliver Zvabva was cited by Ranger as saying the voice of Dzivaguru speaks in the Nyachiranga Mountains on the frontier between north-eastern Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The Dzivaguru cult, which was famous as a rainmaker, was based at the shrine in the foothills of the Mavhuradonha Mountains (Ranger, 1967). Dzivaguru was the father of Karuva who had the powers to bring mist (mhute) in which he and his people and possessions could hide whenever under attack by Nyabapa (Bourdillon, 1979). Dzivaguru and Karuva cults were the original owners of the land and they maintained ritual power over it and the political power of governing the people was given to the invading conquerors (Bourdillon, 1979). Messengers of Mutota went with gifts of snuff tobacco to Dzivaguru and Karuva in order to receive rain.

    It would be safe to conclude that Biri and Ganyire are descendants of Kaluba (Kaluba) who assumed a different totem after committing incest and descendants of Nyamukoko assumed the Savara (Gunguwo) totem to differentiate themselves from the Hungwe cousins. This was obviously unavoidable considering the only other tribes they could have married into were the Khoikhoi and the San until 10th Century when the invading Mbire tribes also crossed the Zambezi into what is now Zimbabwe.

Meki travelled to Zvimba looking for work in Gadzema (Bhaurosi area) where he met up Sarah whom he married to become his wife. After working at Bahurosi Meki was given a herd of 12 cattle as his pension and was given are in Zvimba to settle by his inlaws.
